Consider the color palette of your bedroom.

It doesn’t matter if you’re decorating or staging — paint is powerful. In the bedroom, tranquil color palettes are ideal. Neutral colors from nature help create a relaxing atmosphere. Think calming blues, greens, greys, and taupes. They also have widespread appeal. Add in richer pops of color or personality with your linens and artwork.

Don’t overfill the bedroom.

Think about the scale of your furniture and the size of your space. A crowded bedroom is not relaxing. If you need a large bed, consider keeping other pieces to a minimum. Think outside the box. For example, can a dresser be moved inside a closet?

Create a focal point in your bedroom.

Since the bed is the largest item in the bedroom, it’s a natural attention-drawing focal point. A great headboard is a must. If you don’t have one, once again, think creatively. A gorgeous headboard doesn’t have to be expensive. Hang a large art canvas, a beautiful quilt, or a piece of plywood covered with batting and luxurious fabric.

Clear away technology and clutter in your bedroom.

The last thing you need when you’re settling in for a restful night’s sleep in your bedroom is a brightly lit television or video game system. If you don’t want to remove them, consider a cabinet that lets you hide them from view when not in use. Remove any other unnecessary clutter in your bedroom. Nightstands should be clear, save for a lamp and maybe a good book. Tuck personal items inside nightstand drawers. Tip for sellers: Tuck away all personal photographs.

Choose comfort.

A good-quality mattress with color-coordinated bed linens and pillows are key components of a cozy retreat. Throw pillows create a lavish look but don’t go overboard. Higher quality materials not only feel better. It also helps to create a feeling of luxury. Carpets should be in good shape and clean. If you have hardwoods, a plush rug adds warmth and softness. Tip for sellers: Similar to paint colors, keep your linens neutral.

Don’t forget about the closets.

Pack away your out-of-season clothes to create more space. Not only will this make your closet seem bigger, but it will be much easier to keep tidy. While you’re at it, consider replacing your mismatched hangers. Wooden varieties are best, but even matching plastic hangers will improve the look of your hanging clothes.
